How familiar are Albanians with home banking? - BoA: Number of banking transactions by phone, almost 22% more than in 2024
Albanians are increasingly embracing digital ways of receiving banking services. This growth is undoubtedly an important indicator towards reducing the use of physical cash.
Around 8.2 million banking transactions were carried out from home via phone or computer. According to data from the Bank of Albania, home banking was used almost 22% more than in the January-September period last year.
In terms of the amount of transactions carried out, the figures also show an increase of almost 15%. In January-September 2025, there were 1.9 billion lek through the bank's website or applications.
Throughout this year, although July marked a record for the number of transactions, more money was transferred in June.
Home banking, also known as banking at home, offers access to your online account, as well as the ability to transfer money or perform other actions with a few clicks of the cursor or on your phone screen.
The services offered through home banking vary by bank. However, most of them offer a basic level of online services. They can be divided into two main categories, transactional and non-transactional functions. Transactional functions include credit card payments or loan installment repayments, transfers between personal accounts, transfers to any account, to any bank inside and outside Albania, payments of telephone bills, OSHEE and UKT, etc.
Meanwhile, non-transactional functions include checking balances and account movements, periodic payment orders, debit and credit card balances, consumer and home loans (i.e. outstanding balances, payment dates, installment amounts), details of your term deposit or opening a new deposit.
Despite the increase in the use of home banking, we continue to be among the last in Europe in terms of the percentage of the population that uses the internet for this purpose. According to data from the European Statistical Agency (Eurostat), only 18.5% of Albanians use the internet to obtain online banking services.
