Record EBRD financing in Albania - 203 million euros in 2024 alone. Infrastructure the biggest beneficiary
Last year, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) financed projects worth 203 million euros in Albania, marking the highest level of investment in all years.
Compared to 2023, the value of financing increased by 57 million euros, or 28% more. Although the number of projects was lower, with 5 projects less than in 2023, the total value invested for each project was higher.
The majority of EBRD financing went to the infrastructure sector, accounting for 61% of the total, or around 670 million euros. 33% of the financing was directed towards financial institutions, while 7% went to corporations, namely large enterprises operating in various sectors of the economy.
A few days ago, the EBRD granted a sovereign loan worth 45.75 million euros to the Electricity Distribution Operator. This loan will be used to restructure part of the 81.5 million euros of short-term loans that OSHEE had obtained from commercial banks at the end of 2021, to cover the costs of electricity imports during the global price crisis.
Within the framework of this project, OSHEE has committed to invest up to 45 million euros over the next four years, with the aim of improving the stability of the distribution network, enabling the connection of new renewable energy sources and reducing losses in the network.
In its new strategy for Albania for the period 2025–2030, the EBRD has set three main priorities. These include expanding renewable energy sources, increasing energy sustainability and efficiency, and supporting the private sector to prepare for Albania's accession process to the European Union.
