Career guidance in 30 schools - Pilot program aims to orient young people

Career choice and preparation for the job market are expected to take on a more structured role starting in high school. A new model for developing life skills and career guidance will be implemented in 30 high schools in the country.

The initiative comes at a time when a significant proportion of young people remain outside both education and the labour market. According to OECD data, around 20.9% of young people aged 15–24 in Albania are neither in employment, education nor training, a level more than double the European Union average.

The project, funded by the European Union and implemented by UNICEF Albania in partnership with the Center for Competitive Skills, will last 18 months and aims to help students make more informed decisions about continuing their education and their professional path.

The focus will be on skills that are increasingly important for today's job market, such as critical thinking, communication, collaboration, creativity and digital skills. To this end, the development of digital modules, practical tools for schools, as well as training for teachers, leaders and career guidance coordinators is envisaged.

One of the key elements is the establishment of a structured career counseling model within the school. The aim is to help students better identify their skills and interests, but also to learn about the opportunities offered by the market before deciding on the university or profession they will pursue.

The program also envisions a more direct connection between schools and the labor market, through cooperation with employment offices, universities, businesses, and local communities.
