Implementation of 5G technology starts in Albania - AKEP gives authorization to Vodafone and One Albania for the use of frequencies
The Electronic and Postal Communications Authority (AKEP) has given the authorization for the use of frequencies in the 3.5 GHz band by Vodafone and One Albania, thus paving the way for the implementation of 5G technology in our country.
This decision came after the successful completion of the public tender on the granting of usage rights in the 3400-3800 MHz frequency band, which was opened on August 30 and closed on October 10. With the announcement of the winner, Vodafone and One Albania have settled the corresponding payments in the state budget and in the account of AKEP.
Under the terms of the authorization, the two operators are obliged to cover with these frequencies 55% of the population by the end of 2027 and 85% of the population by the end of 2030. Within 2025, the entrepreneurs must ensure coverage of ports, airports and some other spaces of socio-economic importance, while priority in terms of coverage will also have areas of special importance, which include areas tourism, national parks, roads, highways and tunnels and areas involved in various development projects.
More specifically, by the end of next year, the Port of Durrës, Vlora, Shengjin, Saranda, Porto Romano, the International Airport of Tirana, Kukës, Vlora, the Industrial Zone Tirana - Durrës, as well as the Hospital Centers of Tirana, will have coverage with 5G service in the authorized band, part of the 3.4 GHz - 3.8 GHz spectrum.
AKEP is expected to put into use soon the next main band of 5G, the 700MHz band for the electronic communications sector, immediately after its release by audiovisual media, with the aim of full coverage of the territory and the population with quality 5G service.
5G is the fifth generation of mobile networks, which offers internet speeds 100 times higher than 4G.
