Removal of overhead cables begins in September - Focus on urban centers and tourist areas

Aerial cables, which have become identifying marks of Albanian cities for years, will be subject to interventions for their elimination. The news was announced by Prime Minister Rama a few days ago. SCAN Television learns that concrete interventions on the ground will begin in September.
The process will initially begin with the preparatory phase during July-August 2026, where working groups will be established, responsible institutions will be coordinated, and municipalities will work to identify priority areas in their territory.
The initial focus will be on city centers, tourist areas, main axes, and spaces of particular public importance, where the problem of overhead cables and improvised structures is most evident.
At this stage, there is not yet a final public list of specific problem areas, as they will be determined in cooperation with municipalities, AKEP, OSSH and electronic communications operators.
Currently, newly built complexes have solved this situation by putting cables underground, while the biggest problem appears in older residential complexes, which do not have adequate infrastructure and cables of various types create an unaesthetic image for cities.
The process is conceived as a gradual intervention, with the aim of systematizing overhead networks, eliminating out-of-function cables and moving towards underground infrastructure, for more orderly, safer cities with a higher urban standard. The intervention will be led by the Ministry of State for Local Government, in cooperation with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy, AKEP and telecommunications companies.
