Border rules change, new signage at all points/ New standards for signs, lanes

Border crossing points in Albania will operate with a new signaling and orientation system for travelers. The Council of Ministers has approved a new decision that defines the standards of signs and symbols to be used at all border points in the country, in implementation of the new legal framework for state border control.

The purpose of this change is to create a unified information system, which aims to facilitate the movement of citizens and increase the clarity of procedures for entering and exiting Albanian territory. The orientation signs will be in Albanian and English, making them more accessible to foreign travelers.

According to the decision, the areas where border controls are carried out will be identified with special signage at airports, ports and on road axes leading to land border points. In addition, each crossing point will be equipped with standard identification signs, while where operations are carried out with limited hours, official service hours will also be displayed.

The organization of the crossing lanes is also new. The authorities foresee dedicated divisions for different categories of travelers, depending on their status and the control procedures they must follow. In this way, the aim is to manage the flow more efficiently, especially during periods of high traffic load.

Transit areas will also be clearly identified at seaports and international airports, while entry and exit from the territory of the Republic of Albania will be marked through unified standard signs.

The decision also provides for the possibility of creating separate lanes for various vehicles, including cars, buses and freight vehicles, in accordance with the operational needs of each border crossing point.

With the entry into force of this act, the previous decision of 2016 is repealed, paving the way for a new model of border signage administration. Airport operators, port authorities, the Albanian Road Authority and responsible state institutions will be engaged in the implementation of the new standards.

Authorities estimate that the changes will contribute to increasing security, improving traveler orientation, and harmonizing Albanian practices with contemporary border management standards.
