By-Pass for traffic diversion in Saranda/ The first phase of the new entrance-exit from the city begins
The Albanian Road Authority has announced the opening of the tender for the construction of the Saranda By-Pass, Phase I. The limit fund for this project is 1 billion and 999 million lek excluding VAT, or 20.5 million euros.
According to the document published in the Public Procurement Agency, the Municipality of Saranda in collaboration with the Regional Traffic Authority have proposed the tendering of the project to realize a new entrance-exit to the city, which will allow traffic to be channeled in two directions, facilitating the existing entrance. It will also serve as a city By-Pass, to divert coastal traffic to the west of the city, thus enabling the movement of vehicles away from the center area where there is currently traffic.
Moreover, such a high tourist frequency in the summer season brings an extremely heavy traffic situation in the city and especially at its entrances and exits. The existing road system both within the city and around it is insufficient to accommodate such a flow.
The existing road network is such that the city of Saranda is only accessible through one entry-exit point, Qafë Gjashta. The high tourist frequency in the summer season results in an extremely heavy traffic situation in the city and at its entrances and exits.
Referring to the document, the purpose of this project will be the detailed design of infrastructure works for the treatment of the road network, the construction of roadside parking lots and sidewalks, the design of the sewage system, water supply, lighting and the expropriation plan. The road will generally extend into an uninhabited area, although according to the urban plans of the Municipality of Saranda, the area has prospects for development.
The inadequate condition of the road infrastructure represents the greatest obstacle to the transportation of people and goods, to foreign investment, to the development of tourism, to economic growth, to access to social services, to employment opportunities, and especially to the residents of the relevant areas.
