196 km of railway line rehabilitated by 2030 - WBIF report/ Investments to increase the capacity of power transmission lines
By 2030, 196 kilometers of railway lines are expected to be rehabilitated in Albania. The European Union intends that through the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF), within the next 5 years, the rehabilitation of these 196 kilometers will be completed, without counting here the investments that the Albanian government itself, or the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development are making in the railway sector , which will further increase the length of the lines that will be rehabilitated until 2030.
Also, in the annual report of the Western Balkans Investment Framework, it is envisaged to upgrade 130 kilometers of power transmission lines to a higher capacity of 400 kV. Higher voltage lines will allow larger amounts of electricity to be transmitted over longer distances, but will also avoid potential energy losses.
Meanwhile, renewable energy capacities are expected to increase to 563 MW. In terms of digital infrastructure, 615 schools will be equipped with smart labs for 198,300 students every year.
Since 2008 until today, the value of investments of the Western Balkans Investment Framework in Albania is 4.5 billion euros, of which 722 million euros have been given in loans, while 464.1 million, grants. For the private sector, specifically for the support of micro-businesses, small, medium and large enterprises, 370 million euros have been distributed from this initiative.
In the period from 2020 to 2023, this initiative of the European Union has launched 8 important investments in Albania, which include the construction of the floating photovoltaic plant in the Vaut de Deja hydropower plant, the first of its kind in the region, but also the construction of a solar power plant in Belgium. Also, during the last 3 years, the European Union has invested in the improvement of the Fierza hydropower plant, the rehabilitation of the railway sectors of the line Vorë-Hani i Hoti and Durrës-Rrogozhinë, but also the construction of important bypasses.
The 50 MW solar plant in the Belshi area is expected to produce 79 GWh/year of electricity, equivalent to the energy demand of 16,100 households, but also to reduce over 50,000 tons of CO2 per year. Beyond increasing energy security and reducing electricity imports, the project accelerates the country's transition to a low-carbon economy and promotes sustainable development.
