Austria pays 2 times more than Hungary - Record increase in cross-border travelers. The country closes the roads!
Thousands of people travel every day from Hungary to their jobs in Austria, where they are paid twice as much. More than 120,000 Hungarians work in the neighboring country, mainly in the service and trade sectors.
In recent weeks there has been an increase in traffic at the Hungarian-Austrian border crossing in Sopron, as several roads in Burgenland have been closed to reduce traffic, which the municipality said was done on the grounds of protecting the peace of its residents.
A resident of the area said that the roads were blocked early in the morning as a result of the increase in vehicles. "A lot of people end up taking a shortcut through the countryside," he added.
On the Austrian side, more and more municipalities are trying to prevent traffic from building up on their roads, such as blocking popular border crossings to prevent cars from passing.
At the border crossing between Ágfalva and Schattendorf, the municipality enforced the mandatory purchase of a €160 sticker that allows drivers to pass. However, due to ongoing technical issues, those with a sticker have not been able to do so regardless.
The lack of access resulted in cars being parked near the border, with many people choosing to walk or cycle to work in Schattendorf.
In response, an international law firm launched a lawsuit for compensation against the municipality of Schattendorf, claiming that Hungarians who want to cross the village have to walk more than 30 kilometers. The lawsuit was dismissed at first instance by the Austrian provincial court.
