Paid holiday in case of bad weather - Spain approves "climate leave", workers stay at home
The Spanish government has adopted a series of measures to protect workers from the risks caused by climate change. After the deadly floods in Valencia, where several workers lost their lives on their way home, the government introduced legislation aimed at preventing similar tragedies.
One of the new measures is the so-called "climate leave", which allows workers to be absent from work during bad weather and get paid even though they are absent. In a press conference, Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo said that workers can demand wages if they cannot come to their workplace and cannot work remotely.
Parliament will have a month to turn into law the decree that allows workers to take up to four days of paid leave in the event of extreme weather conditions that could endanger their lives on the journey from home to work. Similar legislation exists in Canada and provides that people can assess whether they should benefit from paid leave following climate warnings issued regularly by competent authorities.
This measure is seen as a reaction to avoid events like the one that killed at least 230 people and caused extensive damage to homes, businesses, vehicles and infrastructure. The law stipulates that the employee can take leave only if the company gives its consent, otherwise it is not possible to activate the protections provided by the climate leave. The new regulations are part of a third $2.2 billion aid package to help Valencia recover.
