Cost 1.35 billion euros to the British economy - Heat wave, 24 million working

The June heatwave in the United Kingdom resulted in the loss of 24 million working hours, equivalent to €1.35 billion to the economy, according to an estimate published by the London School of Economics (LSE).

Many European countries, including the United Kingdom and France, experienced an extreme heat wave in June, which affected from the Iberian Peninsula to Ukraine, passing through the Balkans and Germany.

"People in jobs with higher exposure to high temperatures and greater physical demands, in sectors such as construction and agriculture, reduced their working hours more than those in jobs with lower exposure and less physical demands, such as academia," the study notes.

On average, the reported reduction in working hours was 0.47 hours, according to the study covering the week of June 22, conducted by the LSE’s Grantham Institute and the Euro-Mediterranean Centre for Climate Change (CMCC), which surveyed 1,950 adults across the UK. In addition, 3.6% of respondents, corresponding to around 1.25 million working people in the population, did not work at all that week due to the heat.

The researchers examined how Britons perceived the effects of the heatwave on their working hours, their ability to sleep and any changes to their commute or work environment.

The vast majority (87%) of workers reported at least one impact on their health: sleep disorders, increased fatigue at work and, in some cases, dizziness, fainting or rapid heartbeat.

The UK is a country that remains unprepared for climate change, as experts call on the government to take steps to make workplaces safer.
