Chaos at German airports – Over 1,000 flights canceled as a result of

A one-day strike by workers at 13 German airports, including the hubs of Frankfurt and Munich and all other major destinations in the country, has caused the cancellation of most flights on Monday, March 10. More than half a million people are facing travel disruptions today across the country.

The 24-hour walkout, which began at midnight, includes public sector employees at airports, as well as ground and security staff.

The operator of Frankfurt Airport, Germany's busiest, said no passenger flights would depart from there on Monday. Delays and cancellations are also possible on Tuesday. Of the 1,116 scheduled inbound and outbound flights, 1,050 have already been canceled, with that number expected to rise.

All regular departures and arrivals at Berlin Airport were cancelled, while Hamburg Airport said no departures would be possible.

Cologne/Bonn Airport said there was no regular passenger service and Munich Airport advised travelers to expect a "very reduced flight schedule."

Which airports specifically are on strike?

The strike by the service workers' union ver.di targeted the airports of Hamburg, Bremen, Hanover, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Dortmund, Cologne/Bonn, Leipzig/Halle, Stuttgart and Munich. At the smaller airports of Weeze and Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden, only security workers were called out. The union called the strike on Friday.

But at Hamburg Airport, it added a short-notice walkout on Sunday, March 9, to Monday's strike, arguing it needed to ensure the measure was effective. As a result, around 300 flights were canceled.

The so-called "warning strike," a common tactic in German wage negotiations, is linked to two separate wage disputes: negotiations over a new pay and conditions contract for airport security workers and a broader dispute over wages for federal and municipal government employees. The latter has already led to walkouts at the airports of Cologne/Bonn, Düsseldorf, Hamburg and Munich.

Wage talks in that dispute will resume on Friday, while the next round of talks for airport security workers is expected to begin on March 26.
