133 million euros for photonic chips - the EU wants to strengthen its position in the market of advanced technologies
The European Union will invest 133 million euros in the production of photonic semiconductors in the Netherlands, as part of a wider initiative to develop this industry in Europe. This project aims to strengthen European competitiveness against other global rivals, such as the US and China.
The European Union will invest 133 million euros in pilot production facilities for photonic semiconductors in the Netherlands, the Dutch economy ministry announced.
The funding is part of a total of €380 million aimed at setting up photonic semiconductor manufacturing facilities across Europe under the so-called Chip Joint Venture, a European public-private partnership to promote research and development in the semiconductor industry .
Photonic semiconductors use light, rather than electrons, to perform calculations, with advantages in speed and power consumption, making them increasingly useful for applications including data centers and vehicles.
"Photonics is a technology of strategic importance. Our goal is to have a strong European competitive advantage. Starting from knowledge, innovation, supply chains to final products," said a spokesperson for the Dutch economy ministry.
Some executives from a group of Europe's largest photonic computer chip companies last year asked the European Union to support the growing industry with 4.25 billion euros in funding to help it compete with rivals in Asia and the United States.
After being tasked by the European Commission to explore how the EU should keep its economy greener and more competitive at a time of rising global tensions, former European Central Bank chief Mario Draghi said in a report that the bloc must to invest much more and much faster to economically keep pace with the US and China.
Work on the Dutch facilities is expected to start in 2025, led by the universities of Eindhoven and Twente in collaboration with the Dutch knowledge institute TNO.
