Lufthansa employees on strike - Hundreds of flights canceled. Demand wage increase

Service workers at German airline Lufthansa have gone on strike on Friday. "All Deutsche Lufthansa AG departures from Frankfurt and Munich airports will be affected by the strike," the union announced. The strike is expected to end at 10 p.m. The strike will also affect departures by regional subsidiary Lufthansa Cityline from a total of nine airports: Frankfurt, Munich, Hamburg, Bremen, Stuttgart, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Berlin and Hanover.
For Lufthansa passengers, this means cancellations of over 520 flights. At the main hub in Frankfurt, 75 percent of the approximately 350 scheduled Lufthansa departures have been canceled. At major airports such as Hamburg or Berlin, dozens of flights were also canceled.
The strike could also have consequences for travelers returning from the Easter holidays, as flights to foreign destinations are missing. In response to the strike, Lufthansa announced additional flights from its airlines not affected by the strike. According to it, Discover, Lufthansa City and Eurowings will take over additional flights, as far as possible.
International branches such as Austrian Airlines, Swiss, Brussels Airlines, Air Dolomiti and ITA Airways will also try to offer additional flight frequencies and use larger aircraft on their flights to and from Germany.
Lufthansa's board member responsible for personnel, Michael Niggemann, criticized the timing of the strike. The strike call is particularly hard on passengers returning from the Easter holidays. Furthermore, with Lufthansa and Lufthansa Cityline, two airlines will be affected by the strike at the same time. This escalation is irresponsible.
