UN rejects US resolution and supports European call for Russia's withdrawal

On the third anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) refused to adopt a US-backed resolution on Monday calling for an end to the war in Ukraine. Assembly members refused to approve Washington's resolution because it failed to mention the Kremlin's aggression.

Instead, they adopted a European-backed resolution that demands that Russia immediately withdraw its forces from Ukrainian territories, which the administration of US President Donald Trump opposes.

Washington tried to pressure Kiev to withdraw their resolution in favor of its proposal. Ukraine refused before adopting the resolution with three amendments proposed by the Europeans, adding language to the US proposal that makes it clear that Moscow occupied Kiev in violation of the UN charter.

The amended resolution passed with 93 votes in favor, eight against and 73 abstentions in a setback for the Trump administration at the 193-member world body, whose resolutions are not legally binding but are seen as an indicator of world opinion.

A separate resolution drafted by Ukraine and European countries also passed with 93 votes in favor, 18 against and 65 abstentions. The US, along with Russia, Israel and North Korea, were among the countries that voted no.

The resolutions signaled a decline in support for Ukraine internationally. The UN passed Ukrainian resolutions by overwhelming majority, occasionally seeing more than 140 members approving them condemning Russia.

'The natural right to self-defense'

Ukraine's Deputy Foreign Minister Mariana Betsa said her country was exercising its "natural right to self-defense."

"As we mark three years of this devastation, Russia's total invasion of Ukraine, we call on all nations to stand firm and take the side of the Charter, the side of humanity, and the side of just and lasting peace, peace through strength," she said.

US envoy Dorothy Shea, meanwhile, stressed that multiple previous UN resolutions condemning Russia and demanding the withdrawal of its troops have failed to stop the war, which has dragged on for too long. "What we need is a resolution that marks the commitment of all UN member states to bring a lasting end to the war," Shea said.

Tensions between Washington and Kiev have been simmering for some time, with Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy trading blows. Trump recently called Zelenskyy a "dictator" after he falsely accused Ukraine of starting the war, warning that he "better move quickly" to negotiate an end to the conflict or risk not having a nation to lead at all.

The 47th US president's comments came after Zelenskyy said Trump was living in a "disinformation space" created by Russia. The Trump administration then went on to oppose Kiev's resolution and table its own proposal. Washington also wants to push its vote in the more powerful UN Security Council, where resolutions are legally binding.

The vote passed the Security Council without European amendments to the language mentioning Russian aggression. Shea thanked the council for their cooperation and said the resolution is a "first step" on the path to peace, noting that it is also the first resolution in three years to call for "decisions" to end the war.

“This resolution puts us on the path to peace. It is a first, but crucial, step that we should all be proud of. Now we must use it to build a peaceful future for Ukraine, Russia and the international community.” The resolution was adopted with 10 votes in favor and five abstentions.
