Trump's powers over Iran are limited - Senate passes resolution. Entry into

The US Senate has passed a resolution that would end the war in Iran unless President Donald Trump receives congressional authorization, a blow to the Republican leader 80 days after US and Israeli forces began attacking Iran.

The vote, a procedural measure to move the resolution forward, was 50 to 47, as four of Trump's Republicans voted with all but one of the Democrats in favor. Three Republicans abstained.

The result was a victory for lawmakers, who have argued that Congress, not the president, should have the power to send troops to war, as outlined in the Constitution. However, it was only a procedural vote and the resolution faces significant hurdles before it can take effect.

Even if it is ultimately approved by the 100-member Senate, the resolution must also be approved by the Republican-led House of Representatives and secure a two-thirds majority in both the House and Senate to survive an expected Trump veto.

Trump's Republicans blocked seven previous attempts to advance similar resolutions in the Senate this year. They have also blocked three war powers resolutions by narrow votes in the House of Representatives this year.

Republicans and the White House say Trump's actions are legal and within his rights as commander-in-chief to defend the US by ordering limited military operations.

Some congressional Republicans have accused Democrats of introducing the war powers resolutions solely because of their partisan opposition to Trump.
