Canada, Mexico "retaliate" against the US - They impose tariffs on American goods in response to Trump
Canada and Mexico ordered retaliatory tariffs on American goods in response to sweeping tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump.
Canada initially imposed tariffs of 25% on US imports starting Tuesday. These include beverages, cosmetics and paper products worth 20 billion euros. A second list of goods will be published soon, including passenger vehicles, trucks, steel and aluminum products, some fruits and vegetables, meat and dairy products. The value of these goods is about 83 billion euros.
Mexico has so far only said it will impose retaliatory tariffs, without mentioning any specific tariffs or products.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a statement that Canada and Mexico agreed to "enhance the strong bilateral relationship" between them. Canadian officials have had extensive dialogue with their Mexican counterparts, but according to sources, tariff responses would not be coordinated.
Canada is the largest export market for 36 countries, and Mexico is the U.S.'s largest trading partner. The two countries ordered the measures despite Trump's further threat to increase tariffs if retaliatory tariffs are imposed on U.S. goods. "We certainly are not looking to escalate the situation, but we will defend our country," Trudeau said.
Trump responded by criticizing Canada’s trade surplus with the United States and claiming that without that surplus, “Canada would cease to exist as a viable country.” He also called for the country to “become the 51st state.” “There will be much lower taxes and much better military protection for the people of Canada. And no tariffs!” Trump emphasized.
