Support for the euro at its highest point - Eurobarometer: More than half of Bulgarians support the euro

More than half of Bulgarians now support the euro, according to the latest spring publication of the Eurobarometer survey on public attitudes across the European Union.
In Bulgaria, which became the newest member of the eurozone on January 1, 2026, support for the single European currency increased by 13 percentage points compared to the previous Eurobarometer survey conducted in autumn 2025. The majority of Bulgarians, or 55%, now support the euro, while 39% oppose it, the survey showed.
Overall support for the euro across the EU remained at 74%, marking its highest level of support since the currency was introduced in January 2002. Support was even stronger within the euro area, where more than eight in ten respondents, or 82%, supported the single currency. Looking ahead to the next 12 months, 42% of Bulgarians said they expected the country’s economic situation to worsen, while 29% believed it would remain unchanged from last year. Only 23% of respondents in Bulgaria expected the economy to improve.
Across the EU, expectations were equally pessimistic. Only 16% of respondents said they believed the economic situation in their country would improve over the next year, while 44% expected it to worsen and 29% said it would remain unchanged.
At the same time, 56% of Bulgarian households described their financial situation as “good”, while 41% said it was “bad”. At the EU level, the respective percentages were 75% and 23%.
The survey was conducted between 12 March and 5 April 2026, in all 27 EU Member States and included interviews with 26,415 EU citizens. Interviews were also conducted in nine candidate and potential candidate countries, excluding Ukraine and the United Kingdom. In Bulgaria, 1,015 people participated in the survey.
