Working abroad brings 192 million euros to Albania / Together with remittances, they financed the economy with 466 million euros at the beginning of the year

The income that the Albanian economy benefits from the work of citizens abroad continued to grow at a rapid pace during the first quarter of 2026. According to data from the "Bank of Albania", employee compensation reached 192.4 million euros, the highest level ever recorded for the first three months of the year.
Compared to the same period in 2025, when these revenues were 154.7 million euros, the increase amounts to 24.4%, or about 37.7 million euros more. In just four years, this indicator has tripled, from 62.3 million euros in the first quarter of 2021 to over 192 million euros this year.
According to the Balance of Payments methodology, this income from work abroad includes wages, salaries and other benefits earned abroad by employees resident in Albania, such as seasonal workers, cross-border workers and other persons who work for short-term periods abroad, but who maintain their center of economic interest in Albania.
The continuous increase in this indicator shows that working abroad is bringing more and more income to the Albanian economy, while the demand for labor in European countries and the increase in wages in some sectors have positively influenced this development.
Together with emigrant remittances, these revenues constitute one of the most important sources of foreign exchange inflows into the country and play an important role in financing the Albanian economy. In the first quarter of 2026, remittances and income from work abroad contributed around 466 million euros to the Balance of Payments, helping to alleviate the trade deficit and supporting household consumption.
