Construction, under observation during peak heat - Field Inspectorate, Muçaj: Rigor in the implementation of safety measures
With the increase in temperatures, the State Labor Inspectorate has moved from awareness-raising to field inspections. In addition to the use of Personal Protective Equipment, inspections will focus on compliance with safety protocols directly related to heat exposure.
Employers are asked to avoid working during peak hours and shift activity mainly to early morning or afternoon hours.
"The Labor Inspectorate has had the construction sector and continues to have it in a special focus. In different periods, the risk assessment in this sector is different, but the attention always remains there. We have just completed an intensive campaign, which has been focused on raising awareness about the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). After this phase, the place for field inspections has now been given. Focus of current inspections: In addition to controlling the proper use of personal protective equipment, in this period the inspections will focus on the implementation of safety parameters and protocols directly related to high temperatures", says Eljo Muçaj, Chief Inspector of the State Labor Inspectorate.
But what are the measures that should be taken in the situation of high temperatures?
“The Safety Protocol for High Temperatures includes. Adjusting working hours. Employers should adjust working hours to those time slots where sun exposure is lowest (mainly in the early morning and afternoon hours). Cool environments and breaks. Providing cool environments and giving time for frequent breaks during peak heat. Hydration. Providing uninterrupted drinking water for employees. Specific protection. Using protective creams and personal protective equipment appropriate for hot temperatures. I find it appropriate to call on all entities operating in the construction field to be rigorous in implementing these measures. All necessary measures should be taken, including readiness for emergency assistance in special cases, where we must be close to workers who may need assistance more quickly. Construction is part of our plans and, related to the previous campaign, about 150 construction sites will be inspected during this period, as deficiencies in occupational safety and health measures were identified during the preliminary phase. Therefore, inspections will continue, the Labor Inspectorate will be on the ground and this will be accompanied by occasional announcements, along with the necessary advice, to have a safe and healthy working environment for all workers.”
The State Labor Inspectorate announces that inspections will continue throughout the period of high temperatures, accompanied by advice for employers and employees.
