KESH, 41.6 million euros for energy purchases/ "Weekly practice" changes, energy is provided for a 3-month period
The Albanian Power Corporation has carried out the first purchase of electricity for 2026, contracting an amount of 331,200 mWh for the period July 1 - September 30, 2026. The procedure represents not only the first import of this year, but also one of the largest contracts in recent years, both in terms of volume and duration.
Unlike KESH's usual practice, where energy is purchased mainly for weekly or short-term periods, this time the corporation has chosen to ensure supply for the entire third quarter of the year. In total, 331,200 mWh have been contracted, at an average price of 125.47 euros/mWh, with a value of around 41.6 million euros, excluding VAT.
This purchase comes after a favorable hydro period during the first months of the year. Financial data shows that in the period January - April 456,945 mWh were sold at an average price of 60.51 euros/mWh, generating revenues of around 33.15 million euros including VAT.
However, the arrival of the summer season usually changes the country's energy balance. The decline in flows in the Drini cascade, combined with increased consumption during the hot months, increases the need for securing energy from imports.
Even in 2025, the corporation was forced to import energy throughout the year. According to data from the Energy Regulatory Authority, last year the bill for energy purchases amounted to 272.2 million euros including VAT.
