Slovakia declares state of emergency over numerous cases of infected animals!

Slovakia is continuing its efforts to rid the country of foot-and-mouth disease, after a state of emergency was declared across the country on Tuesday.

A new outbreak of the disease has been detected in Hungary, approximately 15 kilometers from the Slovak border near Bratislava.

Disinfection mats have been placed at Hungarian border crossings, veterinarians are monitoring the situation on the ground, and the destruction of infected animals is continuing.

Agriculture Minister Richard Takáč provided details about the situation during a press conference.

"In Hungary, another farm has been confirmed to have the foot-and-mouth disease virus ," he said. "It is located 40 kilometers from the first farm where the virus was confirmed in Hungary on March 6."

Takáč has also confirmed a fourth case of the disease at a livestock farm in the Slovak village of Lúč na Ostrove.

President Peter Pellegrini called for strict adherence to measures to stop the outbreak from escalating into a full-blown epidemic, which could cause shortages of milk and meat.
