How is war changing the way Europeans travel? - Increased geopolitical tensions are changing priorities
Travel headlines across Europe have been dominated by the effects of tensions involving Iran, from flight cancellations to growing fears over jet fuel supplies. But have these disruptions affected travel demand, or are Europeans still eager to get away this spring and summer?
The latest research from the European Travel Commission (ECT) on the Intra-European Travel Sentiment Monitoring found record levels of interest, with 82% of Europeans planning to travel this season, marking a significant recovery from the pandemic slumps of 2020 and 2021. However, security concerns are becoming increasingly important.
Heightened geopolitical tensions are changing the priorities of European travelers, with security at the top of their concerns. ECT data revealed that 22% of respondents now consider security at their destination to be their top consideration, a 4% increase from last year – particularly in relation to the Middle East.
However, the impact of the conflict in the region weighed most heavily on older travelers, with 45% of respondents over 54 saying they were concerned, compared to 33% among young people aged 18 to 24.
Travelers are also paying attention to costs compared to 2025.
Despite more people wanting to fly, many are taking a cautious approach to spending, opting instead for shorter stays and tighter budgets. ECT found a 3% increase in respondents planning trips of four to six nights, compared to a 5% drop in those wanting stays of seven to 12 nights.
Travel budgets have also shifted towards moderation, with a 6% increase in people willing to spend up to 1,000 euros, while there has been a 9% decrease in travelers wanting to spend 1,500 euros and more.
A study conducted by Teneo, a global advisory firm, revealed significant increases in airline ticket prices, with even the lowest economy class tickets costing passengers 24% more than last year – marking the highest average increase in the last five years.
