US, 100% tariff on chip imports - Companies that produce in American territory

The United States will impose a 100% tariff on semiconductors imported from countries that do not manufacture in the US or do not plan to do so.

In a statement from the Oval Office, President Donald Trump said the new tariff rate would apply to "all chips and semiconductors entering the United States," but not to companies that have committed to manufacturing in the US or are in the process of doing so.

"If, for some reason, you say you're building factories and you don't build them, then we'll tax you later. You have to pay, that's guaranteed," Trump added.

The statements do not constitute a formal announcement of tariffs, and the US president did not provide further details. It is not yet clear which countries will be affected by the new measure, but an industry representative in the Philippines said a 100% tariff on chips would be “devastating” for the country.

The government in Taipei announced that Taiwanese giant TSMC is exempt from a 100% duty on semiconductors. The firm itself has announced that it plans to invest hundreds of billions of dollars in chip and electronics manufacturing in the US over the next four years.

Meanwhile, a senior South Korean trade official said Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix will not be subject to the 100% tariff. He said in an interview that South Korea will face more favorable U.S. tax rates on chips under the trade agreement between the two countries.

Samsung has invested in two chip manufacturing plants in Austin and Taylor, Texas, while SK Hynix has announced plans to build a chip packaging plant and a research center for artificial intelligence products in Indiana.
