Amazon to cut 30,000 jobs as company seeks to cut costs and reduce bureaucracy

Amazon is set to launch a new wave of layoffs that could reach up to 30,000 corporate jobs as the company tries to cut costs and offset excess hiring during the pandemic, according to three sources familiar with the matter.

The figure represents a small fraction of Amazon's 1.55 million total employees, but almost 10% of its roughly 350,000 corporate employees. This would be the largest job cut in history for the company, after eliminating about 27,000 positions by the end of 2022.

In the past two years, Amazon has made smaller cuts in several units, including electronics, communications and others. This time, the measures could affect human resources, equipment and services departments.

Managers of the teams that will be affected have been instructed to receive training on how to communicate with employees following the announcements.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy is leading a campaign to cut what he describes as bureaucratic red tape at the company, including reducing the number of managers. Jassy has set up an anonymous complaint line to identify problems, which has received over 1,500 responses and led to more than 450 process changes.

In June, Amazon's leader stated that the growing use of artificial intelligence could lead to further job cuts, especially in positions that involve repetitive and routine tasks.

The full extent of this new wave is not yet clear. Sources said the number could change over time, depending on the company's financial priorities. Fortune magazine previously reported that the human resources department could face cuts of up to 15%.
