Albania and Kosovo will have a 130 km railway line with a 200 million lek tender

The tender for the feasibility study for the construction of the Albania-Kosovo railway line is officially opened. The project represents the construction of a railway line with a length of 130 km, and it will be divided into several lots. This first phase will cost 200 million and 224 thousand ALL without VAT. The consulting service for this project will be extended in two phases: expression of interest and pre-qualification; and finally, submission of proposals.

There have been several ideas for the construction of the new railway line that will connect Albania with Kosovo, so it has been decided that only two options will be considered:

Option 1 suggests crossing the railway at the points "Mjedë-Kufi in Qafë Morinë - Kramovik". The total length from Mjeda to the border with Kosovo is about 107 km. The maximum movement speed is expected to be 100 km/h, while the total length of the route from the Kramovik station to the border in Qafë Morinë is calculated to be around 30 km, so the total railway line in this option is expected to be 137 km.

Meanwhile, option 2 suggests crossing the railway at the points "Milot-Border in Vërmicë - Landovicë". The Albanian part, together with the Milot – Rrëshen part, covers a length of 108 km. But this road is described as difficult in the project as it is blocked. While the rest of Kosovo, from the dividing point of the Klinë - Prizren line to the border in Vermica, is calculated at about 17 km, for a total of 125 km.

Meanwhile, another option states that the consultant can determine the crossing by studying the situation on the ground.

The railway lines will be supplied with electricity. The axle load of the trains will be 22.5 tons per axle, while their speed will be 80–120 km/h.

The general objective of the study is to contribute to the implementation of the new railway between Albania and Kosovo, which will result in the improvement of transport, the reduction of road traffic and overcrowding, the reduction of transit traffic in cities, and the reduction of urban traffic and pollution due to vehicle emissions. The study has regional importance.

The promoters of this study are the Albanian Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy and the Ministry of Environment, Spatial Planning and Infrastructure in Kosovo. The expected duration of the study is 14 months, of which 2 months will be focused on the initial phase and 12 months will be dedicated to the study.

Meanwhile, there is a detailed description in the documents of the current Albanian and Kosovo railway networks and their shortcomings or improper conditions. The Albanian railway is not fully electrified, and the trains are transported by diesel locomotives. Due to the lack of investment, the railway infrastructure is very weak, with a lack of terminals, tracks, and well-developed lines, except for the Durrës - Tirana section. Trains in our country move at a speed of 20 km/h to 40 km/h. This network has only four main lines. On the other hand, the railways of Kosovo extend to a length of 333 km. They are connected to Serbia and North Macedonia. Trains in Kosovo travel at speeds ranging from 20 to 40 kilometers per hour.
