The German population, aging - Study: The economy needs 288 thousand immigrant workers per year!
Germany's economy will need hundreds of thousands of immigrants a year to counter the negative impact of its aging society, according to a new study fueling an increasingly heated debate on the issue.
The Bertelsmann Stiftung report puts the required annual influx at 288,000 workers by 2040 in a scenario in which women and older people who are already there start working more as well. If these assumptions do not materialize, as many as 368,000 immigrants may be needed to keep the labor force from shrinking significantly and damaging German growth.
This compares with average net immigration of about 600,000 in the decade to 2023, which included increases due to the wars in Syria and Ukraine. The decade before that the country saw an average influx of about 136,000 a year, according to Bloomberg calculations based on numbers from statistics agency Destatis.
Demographic change, which will present major challenges to the German labor market in the coming years with the retirement of the baby boomers, also requires emigration.
Of course, priority should be given to developing the potential of the local labor force, both natives and those who have already emigrated, and increasing participation in the labor market. But this alone will not be enough to meet future labor demand up to 2040.
The report comes as Germany faces snap elections early next year, with prolonged economic stagnation and emigration both key issues in political campaigns.
Extremist parties on the right and left, which have called for tougher restrictions on foreigners, have surged in the polls following a surge in refugees in recent years.
