Nobel Prizes in Physics/ American scientists announced winners for discoveries in quantum technology
Scientists John Clarke, Michel Devoret and John Martinis won the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics for "the discovery of macroscopic quantum tunneling and the quantization of energy in an electrical circuit," the awarding institution announced.
“This year’s Nobel Prize in Physics has paved the way for the development of the next generation of quantum technologies, including quantum cryptography, quantum computers and quantum sensors,” the official statement said. All three winners reside in the United States.
The Nobel Prize in Physics is awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and includes a prize of about $1.2 million, which is divided among the winners if there is more than one, as is the case in many cases.
These prizes were established through the will of Alfred Nobel, who amassed a fortune from the invention of dynamite. Since 1901, with rare interruptions, the prizes have annually recognized achievements in science, literature, and peace. Later, economics was added.
Physics was the first category mentioned in Nobel's will, reflecting the importance of the discipline in his time. Today, the Nobel Prize in Physics remains the most prestigious award in the field.
In keeping with tradition, physics is the second prize awarded this week, after medicine, which went to two American scientists and a Japanese one, for their discoveries in the immune system. The chemistry award will be announced on Wednesday.
