A shirt worn by Pelé during his brilliant performance in the 1958 FIFA World Cup final has been sold at auction house Sotheby's for $4.9 million. The shirt becomes the most expensive Pelé item ever sold at auction and the second most valuable soccer item ever sold.

Brazil's blue number 10 jersey was worn by 17-year-old Edson Arantes do Nascimento, now known to the world as Pelé, on June 29, 1958, at the Rasunda Stadium in Stockholm, where Brazil defeated host country Sweden 5-2 to win the first World Cup title.

Pelé scored twice in the final, becoming the youngest player to score in a World Cup final, a record that still stands. “It was the shirt he wore when he introduced himself to the world,” said Brendan Hawkes, vice president of sports strategy and development at Sotheby’s.

After receiving 10 bids from more than five bidders, the jersey sold for $4.9 million during Sotheby's Sports Week in New York. The most expensive jersey ever sold is Diego Armando Maradona's so-called "Hand of God", which sold for $9.3 million at Sotheby's in 2022, becoming the most expensive soccer object ever sold at auction.

Before this jersey sold for $4.9 million, the most expensive Pelé-related item ever sold at auction was a trading card from his debut season, which sold for $976,000 in June 2026. The jersey itself had previously sold in 2004 for $105,600.

Pele's shirt was the highlight of Sotheby's "The Beautiful Game" auction, which coincided with the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
