Total loan portfolio "weighs" around 840.9 billion lekë/ Easing

In recent years, the Albanian economy has experienced a significant increase in total credit, reflecting sustainable development and increased confidence in the financial sector. According to the latest data from the “Bank of Albania”, total credit reached 840.9 billion lek at the beginning of 2025, with a significant increase of 13.5% compared to January of last year, and an increase of 0.7% compared to December 2024.

So, if we talk in absolute figures, it turns out that in the span of one month, credit has increased by 6.1 billion lek, while in the span of one year it records an increase of 99.9 billion lek.

In annual terms, this increase is mainly attributed to the expansion of lending to “Other financial corporations”. On the other hand, business loans have also recorded a significant increase in the space of one year. From 414.8 billion lek in January last year, it has increased by about 59 billion lek in January this year, reaching about 474 billion lek. The increase over one year is estimated at 14.3%.

This growth was mainly supported by an increase in foreign currency loans, which reached 258 billion lek, from 220 billion lek. In one year, foreign currency loans increased by 17.5%, while loans in lek increased by 10.6%.

Even if we refer to the one-month period, business loans increased by about 0.9%, where it seems that foreign currency loans led the growth, while over the course of a month, business loans in lek decreased by 0.7%.

Banks have eased lending conditions, reducing collateral requirements and improving risk perceptions for the sectors in which businesses operate. Meanwhile, the positive outlook for the economy and increased business confidence have played an important role in increasing demand for credit.
