How many bank accounts do foreigners have in Albania? Historical record in 2025, the majority belong to individuals

The number of foreign bank accounts in Albania continued to grow during 2025, reaching its highest historical level.
According to data from the Bank of Albania, at the end of last year, non-resident individuals and companies owned 76,279 bank accounts in the Albanian banking sector. Compared to 2024, when their number was 71,845, this results in an increase of about 6%.
According to the account breakdown, the vast majority of non-residents using Albanian banks are individuals. In 2025, about 73,702 belong to individuals, while only 2,577 are in the name of companies. This means that about 97% of non-resident accounts are dominated by individuals.
The performance over the years shows a steady expansion of this indicator, especially after 2019. However, the trend has not been linear throughout the period. After a strong increase in 2011, when the number of accounts reached over 31 thousand, a decline was recorded in the following years, before the indicator entered a steady growth trajectory in the last decade.
Despite the increase in the number of non-resident accounts, their share in the total banking system remains low. In 2025, they accounted for about 1.8% of total accounts, down slightly from the previous year, due to the faster expansion of resident accounts.
The expansion of non-resident accounts is mainly related to the presence of Albanian emigrants who keep their savings in local banks, but also to the increased interest of foreign citizens to invest in Albania, especially in real estate.
The data suggest a gradual deepening of non-residents' financial ties with the Albanian banking sector, although their weight in the total system remains relatively limited.
