Remittances reach new record at the beginning of the year/ Money sent by emigrants reached 274 million euros

The money that Albanian emigrants send to their families in Albania continues to grow, remaining one of the most important sources of foreign exchange inflows into the economy. According to data from the "Bank of Albania", remittances reached 274.3 million euros in the first quarter of 2026, the highest level ever recorded for this period.
Compared to the same period a year ago, when remittances were 250.7 million euros, inflows increased by about 9%, while in relation to 2024 the increase reaches over 13%. The positive trend has become stronger after the pandemic, with flows that have increased year on year and have reached record levels.
The increase in remittances is also linked to the expansion of the Albanian diaspora. Demographic data show that the decline in the country's population continues to be mainly influenced by emigration. Although in 2025 the natural increase in the population was positive, with 1,147 more births than deaths, net migration remained negative with 28,531 people, confirming that emigration continues to be the main factor in population contraction.
According to previous publications by INSTAT, data show that the main source of remittances remains the Albanian communities in Italy and Greece, where there are even more immigrants. These financial flows constitute an important support for household consumption and a stable source of foreign exchange for the Albanian economy.
However, the remittance records come at a time when the European currency has hit historic lows, leaving families dependent on foreign income to benefit less.
