Dairy imports hit all-time high/ Third quarter of 2025 marks biggest increase in two decades

Imports of dairy products, eggs and honey reached an all-time high in the third quarter of 2025, confirming the growing dependence of the Albanian market on foreign supplies of basic food products. Official data show that from July to September, the total value of imports in this category reached 2.28 billion lek, with 815 million lek in July, 773 million in August and 697 million lek in September, the highest level ever recorded for this period.
The increase in imports can be directly linked to the decrease in the number of dairy animals and the decline in domestic milk production, based on INSTAT figures. According to livestock statistics for the period 2020-2024, we see a steady decline in milk production in the country, which directly explains the increase in dairy imports. According to official figures, total milk production has fallen from 1 million 52 thousand tons in 2020, to only 877 thousand tons in 2024
However, the increase in imports is not being accompanied by a reduction in prices for the consumer. On the contrary, data shows that the prices of dairy products in the market have remained at significant levels.
But which countries have we imported these products from?
Italy, Germany, Serbia, Greece and the Netherlands are the five main import partners for bakery products, eggs and honey.
Even if we refer to imports in weight for this chapter, the data show that recent months are very close to the historical record. In terms of value, the third three months of the year result in an increase of 3.3%, compared to the July-September period of 2024.
