What is happening with age in Albania? From children to young people. The country is losing young generations. The elderly are increasing

As the number of residents declines year by year, the most noticeable changes are appearing in the age structure, where younger age groups are decreasing, while the proportion of older people is constantly increasing.
An analysis of the data by age group shows that the population decline affects almost the entire younger generation. Children in the 0-4 age group fell from 107 thousand to 104 thousand, or by 2.3%, while the 5-9 age group recorded an even stronger contraction, of 3.9%. There are also declines in the 10-14 and 15-19 age groups, confirming the continuation of the trend of decreasing fertility in the country.
The decline also continues among young people of working age. The 20-24 age group fell by 3.9%, while the 25-29 age group fell by 4.4%. The 30-34 age group also recorded a decline of 4.7%, one of the highest among economically active age groups. These figures reflect the impact of emigration and the movement of young people to other countries in search of better living and employment opportunities.
The picture is different for older age groups. The number of people aged 65-69 increased by 2.5%, while the age group 70-74 increased by 6%. Significant increases were also recorded for people aged 75-79, who increased by over 8%, while the age group 85 and older increased by around 8.3%, reaching over 43 thousand inhabitants.
Meanwhile, the median age of the population has increased from 44.3 to 45 years, while the elderly dependency ratio has reached 35.7%, indicators that prove that Albania is facing an accelerated demographic aging process.
Data shows that the country is gradually losing younger generations, while the share of the elderly population is becoming increasingly large. This development is expected to have a long-term impact on the labor market, the pension system and the economic structure of the country, making population aging one of the main demographic challenges of the coming years.
