Taxis in Albania, among the most expensive in Europe/ The growth of tourism has increased the demand for transportation, but prices have decreased

Albania ranks among the countries with the highest taxi fares in Europe, according to the latest data from the international platform Numbeo. The average cost of one kilometer at a standard fare is estimated at around $3.7.
The difference becomes even more apparent when Albania is compared to Balkan countries. According to Numbeo data, a kilometer by taxi in Serbia costs an average of about $1, in Montenegro approximately $1.2, while in North Macedonia less than $1. Even in Romania and Bulgaria, two European Union member states, fares remain significantly lower than those reported for Albania.
This means that a 5-kilometer trip in Albania can cost several times more than the same trip in neighboring countries, making taxi transportation a relatively expensive service for citizens.
On the other hand, departure fees and fixed costs are not among the highest in Europe. According to Numbeo, Albania ranks among the relatively affordable countries in terms of basic taxi fares, which indicates that the majority of the cost is related to the per-kilometer fare.
One factor that may have contributed to the price increase is the rapid development of tourism. In recent years, Albania has experienced a significant increase in the number of foreign tourists, becoming one of the most popular destinations in the region. The increasing flow of visitors has also brought greater demand for transportation services, especially in Tirana, on the coast and in tourist areas.
In parallel with the growth of tourism, companies and operators offering taxi services have also been added to the market, expanding the offer for citizens and visitors. However, despite the increase in competition and the number of vehicles in circulation, Albania continues to remain among the countries with the highest cost per kilometer of taxi travel.
