How are gender relations divided in Albania? Women dominate in numbers, men in

The Institute of Statistics has published detailed data on gender segregation in Albania, shedding light on population, births, mortality, health, the labor market, and social benefits.

At the end of 2024, the Albanian population was composed of 50.5% women and 49.5% men. Compared to the previous year, there was a population decrease of 1.3% for men and 1% for women. The sex ratio of births remains high: for every 100 girls born, 108 boys are born, a figure that exceeds the natural rate of 105. Meanwhile, infant mortality has decreased to 5.3 per thousand births for boys and 4.1 for girls, giving a positive sign for healthcare.

The health of the population continues to be mainly affected by diseases of the circulatory system, which cause 54.7% of deaths in women and 51.4% in men. During 2024, out of 23,310 registered births, 4,192 abortions were recorded, a ratio of 180 abortions for every 1,000 births. The highest abortion rate among young women was recorded at the age of 18, with 179 abortions per 1,000 births, while the majority of abortions are performed by women 20–34 years old, the most reproductive age group.

In the labor market, men are more favored. Unemployment for men aged 15–64 is 8.9%, compared to 10% for women. The reasons for inactivity vary significantly: 14% of women say they stay out of the labor market because of household duties, while only 0.4% of men give this reason. Meanwhile, the number of unemployed female job seekers increases with age, while the opposite is observed for men. In both sexes, about half of unemployed job seekers have completed only 8/9 years of education (46.9% women and 44.3% men).

There is also an interesting breakdown in pensions: 48.4% of urban pension beneficiaries are women, while in rural areas this figure increases significantly to 63.7%. In economic terms, the gender wage gap is 4.9% in favor of men, but there is a positive development compared to a year ago, this gap has decreased by 1.3 percentage points.
