How should price abuses be controlled? - Expert Musta: Mechanism for measuring profit margins for companies

While the first effects of the conflict in the Middle East have begun to be felt in Albania, reflected in the increase in fuel prices, experts also predict changes in the prices of other products, including food.
In an interview with SCAN TV, economic expert Eugen Musta emphasizes that price increases are often speculative and therefore recommends taking measures aimed at protecting consumers from abuses.
"Expected increase in oil, energy and food prices. An increase in oil prices has begun, which is still moderate, but it remains to be seen whether the situation will last. After that, it will be related to how this news will be interpreted. Sometimes in our country, the effect that is felt in the price increase is speculative. In times of crisis, world practice allows the state to intervene by measuring the profit margin of companies, through the Competition Authority and other forms of control."
But is it difficult for state authorities to measure profit margins for companies and mainly importers?
"Measuring profit margins comes with an administrative cost but it is not impossible. Transparency boards are an extreme solution, as there are authorities that can exercise this function."
During 2022, due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which was followed by a very high price increase in Albania, the government established the Transparency Board for Monitoring Food Prices and the Fuel Board. But months later, the Constitutional Court abolished the Food Board, deeming it incompatible with the Constitution.
