Albanians are reading more news online - Nordic countries dominate the rankings, Albania registers a slight increase in readers

The Internet is increasingly consolidated as the main source of information in the world and Albania. The latest data from Eurostat for 2025 show that 63.87% of Internet users in Albania read news sites, newspapers or magazines online, marking an increase compared to 2024, when this percentage was 62.75%.
The increase may seem modest, but it confirms a steady trend towards information through digital platforms. Changes in the way information is consumed, the spread of smartphones and easier access to the internet have led more and more citizens to follow daily developments through online media.
However, Albania continues to lag behind the European Union average. In 2025, the average for the 27 EU member states reached 66.41%, up from 65.05% the year before. This means that, although Albanians are increasingly turning to the internet for information, the pace of online media use remains somewhat lower than that of European countries.
At the European level, the undisputed leaders remain the Nordic countries and several Northern European countries. Finland tops the ranking with 89.63% of users reading news online, followed by Ireland with 86.66%, the Czech Republic with 86.98% and Cyprus with 85.49%. These countries are characterized by high levels of internet use and a strong tradition of consuming information through digital platforms.
On the other hand, the lowest percentages in Europe are recorded in Romania (58.84%), France (55.94%), Italy (54.35%) and Turkey (53.22%), indicating that information habits vary significantly from one country to another.
One of the reasons that Albania remains below the European average may be related to the role that television continues to play in informing citizens. Unlike many Western European countries, where online media have become the main source of news.
