How much are fashions affected by US tariffs? - Zekja: Our exports will be affected by the taxes imposed on Europe
For imports from various countries around the world, the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, applied additional tariffs.
It imposed a tariff of 10% on our country, which, together with Kosovo and Montenegro, is lower than countries in the region and beyond. But what will be the impact on the garment manufacturing sector with custom-made materials in Albania?
Florjan Zekja, PEA Coordinator, said, "Albania exports directly to the USA somewhere around 120-130 million dollars, which is a relatively low figure and it is not that it affects much. Moreover, for those who are exporters, according to the information I have, the tax was 8% and has become 10%. It is not a high tax, a high surcharge. If we compare it with the countries of the region where Serbia has 37%, Turkey 37%, these are much higher taxes, normally they put the exporting business of these countries in difficulty, but Albania has a specificity regarding manufacturing exporters, because 90% of our exports go to the European community. "
But what is the "blow" that could come to Albanian exporters through the imposition of taxes by the US?
"At the moment when 20% taxes are imposed on the European community, they will naturally affect Albanian exporters because our main partners are Germany and Italy, where they account for the lion's share of our products, almost 90% of the total number of Albanian producers. At the moment when the fashion, textile and footwear sectors in the European community are in difficulty, Albanian business will also naturally be in difficulty. But this has another specificity, because in terms of workwear, we produce for many German and Italian partners who produce clothing for automotive companies, and if in the future these companies have a decrease in their workforce, it will also be reflected in the production of workwear by Albanian businesses. So this is a domino effect that does not directly affect Albanian business through the 10% tax, but indirectly because we are part of the European community ," he said.
According to him, these tariffs have caused an earthquake, but if no measures are taken, the situation will worsen further.
