Rainfall, Koçiu: Preventive evacuation of residents continues in some areas
Communication with the media of the Minister of Internal Affairs, Albana Koçiu, after the meeting of the Civil Emergency Headquarters in Durrës Region. All structures are on the ground and in full readiness to manage the situation due to heavy rainfall. In some areas, the preventive evacuation of residents has begun. The situation is being constantly monitored and kept under control, while the absolute priority remains the life and safety of citizens. Institutions will continue to be by their side.
Question: You have just held a Civil Emergencies meeting, how is the situation?
Minister Koçiu: We have just concluded the meeting of the Civil Emergencies Headquarters here in the Durrës Prefecture, attended by all the heads of institutions that are part of the Civil Emergencies mechanism. As a result of the heavy rainfall of recent days, in the Durrës region, we generally have a situation that has worsened in the last 24 hours. Two of the hottest areas are in the administrative units of Vadardhë, Sukth and Katundi e Ri. There are two areas where the evacuation plan has been installed and is being implemented by the Armed Forces and Civil Emergencies, in cooperation with the State Police and all structures that are on standby and are coordinating the evacuation of residents.
I call on all citizens of these areas to follow the instructions of emergency teams and institutions so that we do not endanger the lives of the people themselves, but certainly also the living things in their homes.
It will definitely be followed by an assessment of the damages, just as the municipality of Durrës has begun an assessment and assessment of the damages caused as a result of the rainfall. But at this moment, what is most important, and here I would ask for the cooperation not only of the citizens but also of the media, which for the sake of the truth have been on the ground all the time reporting, so that we can raise awareness as much as possible, because now, at these moments, people's lives are important.
We need to avoid any such incidents and then we will proceed with an assessment plan and a compensation plan.
Question: It's now 4 pm, how many people have been evacuated so far and where have they been accommodated?
Minister Koçiu: We have an assessment so far, there are about 20 families who have been evacuated in both of these two areas, namely Katund të Ri and Vadardhë, while the situation is dynamic. Currently, the Armed Forces structures are there and are evacuating every apartment that is seen as a danger and poses a risk to the residents.
It is certainly important that they trust the state authorities and not take measures on their own to leave, to leave the apartment or to find another way or solution, as the responsible structures and authorities themselves are competent and know how to move from their home to accommodate in a safe place.
Currently there are hotel structures, but in the meantime there are also two structures of the Convalescence of the Ministry of the Interior and that of the Ministry of Defense, which have been made available and are being supported by the State Material Reserves to complete the entire instrument, or mechanism of civil emergencies that is set up in these cases. As I said, the state structures are all engaged, they are on their feet to cope and to help every city and every family in need.
