What do Albanians borrow the most for? - BoA: Consumer credit reached 92 billion lek at the end of the first quarter
The first three months of 2025 have witnessed an increase in citizens' demand for financing from banks. During this period, not only more loans were taken out for home purchases, but also for financing consumption.
At the end of the first quarter, credit to cover citizens' personal needs for the purchase of professional equipment, home furniture, education, health, vacations, food, car purchases and others reached 92 billion lek. The latest figures from the Bank of Albania indicate an increase of approximately 5% in credit for this purpose.
But which of the regions turns out to have received the most consumer loans?
Since the majority of the population is concentrated in Tirana, more than half of consumer credit is granted to individuals in the capital. According to official statistics, the value of consumer credit in the Tirana region was 51 billion lek, while in other cities in the country it does not even reach 10 billion.
Durrës is the second region where there has been more demand and more consumer loans have been approved by banks. Specifically, consumer credit in this region registered an increase of 4.5% compared to the end of last year.
Meanwhile, citizens of the Lezha and Korça regions result in the smallest amount of loans received, with 1.7 billion and 2.6 billion lek, respectively.
Consumer credit is granted to individuals to finance specific types of expenses, for example to purchase durable goods such as household appliances, electronic devices, cars, furniture, or to purchase non-durable goods such as food products and others.
