Parliament votes to declare Iran a terrorist state - Balla: Our country has been

Albania has officially declared Iran a terrorist state. The Socialist Party's draft resolution was approved this Tuesday in a special parliamentary session with 79 votes in favor and 1 abstention.

The leader of the Socialist parliamentary group, Taulant Balla, in his speech said that Albania remains steadfast in the fight against terrorism.

" Terrorism is not just an act of violence, it is a form of intimidation, destabilization and undermining of the democratic order. It strikes civilians, institutions, and it also strikes the principles on which the international system was built after the Second World War. The fight against terrorism is not simply a matter of security, it is a battle to preserve international peace and stability. Albania has been and remains a clear and unwavering country in this stance. We are a country that has chosen the side of democracies, international cooperation against terrorism. Albania has not only the right, but also to contribute to the collective security of NATO and the international community. The resolution is part of this ongoing commitment. Our country has been the object of attacks in cyberspace. The serious attack on the institutions of the Republic of Albania in 2022 was one of the most serious episodes of cyber aggression by a sovereign country. A few days ago, the Parliament was the target of a new cyber attack. These are hostile acts aimed at destabilizing democratic institutions and the normal functioning of a state. "The resolution aims to address this reality. We aim to condemn any form of state support for terrorism, we condemn the use of hybrid means against the institutions of sovereign states. The resolution calls on the Albanian government to declare Iran's Revolutionary Guard and Hezbollah as terrorist organizations ," Balla said.

Meanwhile, the chairman of the Committee for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Igli Hasani, said that for Albania, it is not just a geopolitical issue.

"For years, the support of Iranian state structures for non-state structures, as well as the use of proxy structures to exert influence and pressure in various regions, including the Western Balkans and our country, has been documented."

"For Albania, the issue is not just geopolitical. In 2022, institutions faced a serious attack, investigations and assessments of partners linked it to the Islamic Republic of Iran. Today we face cyberattacks and hybrid forms that undermine institutions ," said Hasani.

The declaration of Iran as a terrorist state was announced a few days ago by the Prime Minister, as a result of rising tensions in the Middle East and a cyberattack by Iranian hackers on the Albanian Parliament.
