Online every day, but digitally "illiterate" - Albanians use the internet a lot, but have few digital skills
The young generation from 16 to 29 years old has led Albania to the top 4 countries in Europe for daily internet use, surfing mainly on social networks.
According to data from the European Statistical Agency, last year, 97.46% of this age group used the internet every day. Only in the Czech Republic, Cyprus and Greece, there are more young people addicted to the internet than in Albania.
However, this dependence on the Internet does not translate into knowledge development among these young people. Paradoxically, according to the data, only 51% of young people possess basic knowledge of digital skills. Compared to the average of European Union countries, Albania is far below, with a difference of almost 20 percentage points.
This ranking is also supported by data from the Balkan Barometer, according to which Albania has higher Facebook usage than the regional average, with 62.5% versus 46%.
Also, active TikTok usage in Albania is higher, with 63.4% of citizens, while Instagram usage is also above the regional average, with 41.8%.
The number of Albanian users on social networks also remains at very high levels. The largest social network, Facebook, alone has about 1.86 million users, in a country with a population of about 2.4 million.
