Sukth-New Port of Durres Railway Line - Tender for design, should allow the

The Durrës Port Authority aims to build a railway line for the transport of goods, connecting the new commercial port in Porto Romano with the railway station in Sukth. This department has opened the tender with a limit fund of about 23.7 million lekë for the realization of the detailed technical project of this line, arguing that its construction will give the new port direct access to the national railway network.

The tender documents state that the 34-kilometer Durrës-Tirana railway line is undergoing a complete reconstruction to meet European standards for speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour, including a modern train signaling and command system. This railway will have 6 stations, while at the entrance to the Sukth station a railway connection will be provided with the area where the New Commercial Port of Durrës will be built in Porto Romano. The documents also specify that the railway branch to enter the new port has been designed in advance to connect to the main railway network through a railway triangle.

Meanwhile, the technical parameters of the construction of the Porto Romano - Sukth railway line must allow the operation of freight trains, which will circulate from the Albanian railway network to the EU railway network and vice versa.

The beneficiaries of this project are the Durrës Port Authority and the Albanian Railways, while in the long term, this line is intended to be connected to Corridor 8 and the railways towards Kosovo and Central Europe, transforming the port of Porto Romano into a strategic international hub. Meanwhile, the latest INSTAT data for the second quarter of 2025 showed that the volume of goods transported via railways was 120.2 thousand tons, marking a decrease of 16.1%, compared to the second quarter of 2024.
