Shkodër-Gjakovë Railway, with combined financing - 1.8 billion euro project, HSH: Works to start within 2-3 years

"Financing for the construction of the Shkodër - Gjakova railway is expected to be secured through a combination of instruments, including funding from various donors, as well as national contributions from Albania and Kosovo." This is according to the Albanian Railways, which calls this combined financing model, already successfully applied in other railway projects. "This model offers flexibility to cover a project of such magnitude," - HSH told TV SCAN.
According to the feasibility study, the costs for this railway segment are estimated at 1.8 billion euros. Around 1.7 billion euros are costs needed for construction, while the rest are estimated as costs for permits, expropriations, etc.
The railway line from Shkodra to Gjakova will have 7 stations, at a length of 105.8 km. The segment will contain 43 bridges and 14 tunnels, while the total length of the tunnels is 35.3 km.
According to the Albanian Railways, the project is expected to last approximately 12 years from the start of design to full operation. “Considering the current pace of preparation of technical documentation, actual construction could begin within the next 2–3 years, after the completion of the preliminary design and the international procurement process ,” the ministry said.
The expectations are that this line will have a significant impact on both freight transport and passenger movement.
