The era of fixed telephony is coming to an end/ AKEP: Internet is returning to the main communication service in the country

The Internet is increasingly consolidated as the main means of communication in Albania, while traditional services are gradually losing users. This is confirmed by the latest data from the Electronic and Postal Communications Authority for the third quarter of 2025, which show a clear shift of citizens towards digital services.
According to the report, the number of subscribers with broadband access from fixed networks has reached around 711 thousand, marking a steady increase compared to both the previous quarter and the same period a year ago. This growth is mainly related to the growing need for internet in the family, for work, education, online services and entertainment.
The most frequent choice of citizens remains the “Internet Only” package, which is used by over half of subscribers. At the same time, interest in combined packages that also include fixed telephony continues to decline, reflecting a clear change in the way of communication. Meanwhile, packages that combine internet with television still hold the main weight among integrated offers.
On the other hand, fixed telephony is experiencing a continuous decline. The number of users has dropped to around 155 thousand, a clear indication that this service is increasingly being abandoned by citizens, who are replacing it with communication via the internet and mobile telephony.
Changes are also observed in the mobile market. During the third quarter of 2025, there was an increase in users compared to the previous quarter, however, in annual comparison the figures remain lower. Despite this, the use of the internet from mobile networks is expanding significantly and now the majority of mobile users are active online, mainly for social networks, communication applications and digital services.
Data shows that the electronic communications market in Albania is undergoing a clear transformation towards digital services, while classic forms of communication are gradually losing their importance in the daily lives of citizens.
