Agreement on the cross-border railway tunnel - North Macedonia-Bulgaria, aims to strengthen the strategic position

Bulgaria and North Macedonia signed an agreement for the joint preparation, construction and operation of a cross-border railway tunnel, aiming to strengthen transport links between the two neighboring countries.
The agreement was signed by Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Communications, Grozdan Karadzhov, and his Macedonian counterpart, Aleksandar Nikolovski.
The Bulgarian minister described the agreement as an important step in bilateral relations, emphasizing that the tunnel will fill the missing rail link between the two countries and improve transport between the Black Sea and the Adriatic Sea.
He said the 2.4-kilometer tunnel will have a direct impact on the economic development of the region and will strengthen integration with the European Union and NATO transport networks.
On the other hand, the North Macedonian counterpart stressed the strategic, economic and geopolitical importance of the tunnel for both the Balkans and Europe. He added that the project takes on particular importance in the context of Russia's war against Ukraine, as the railway corridor will support NATO operations and help Ukraine protect its sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.
According to official sources, the axis from Bellakovca to Kriva Palanka is under construction, while work on preparing the third axis, from Kriva Palanka to the border with Bulgaria, is accelerating.
