1 billion euro financing for gas infrastructure - Serbia and the World Bank to

Serbia will begin negotiations with the World Bank in mid-August on financing terms for a 1 billion euro program to expand and modernize the country's gas infrastructure.

The new multi-year program will be implemented in several phases. The first phase will cover the construction of a section of a planned gas pipeline connecting the southeastern city of Niš with the central city of Velika Plana, and the preparation of technical documentation for projects to be carried out in subsequent phases.

Phases two and three will involve the expansion of existing gas storage facilities and the construction of new ones, associated gas pipelines, and the construction of a gas pipeline from the northeastern town of Mokrin, near the border with Romania, to the capital Belgrade. The studies should also include an analysis of the readiness of Serbia's gas infrastructure to transport hydrogen.

The gas pipelines planned to be built under the program will enable Serbia to fully utilize the potential of existing gas interconnections, as well as the connections it plans to build with North Macedonia and Romania.

According to officials, the division of responsibilities and reform of the gas sector is almost complete following the adoption of the new Gas Law, the creation of Gas Infrastruktura, which will manage all gas infrastructure in Serbia, and the certification of Transportgas Srbija as an independent system operator responsible for the transmission of natural gas. The state-owned gas importer and distributor Srbijagas will remain responsible for supplying households and businesses with gas.

Srbijagas operates a 6,633 km distribution network, including 600 km of medium-pressure pipelines and 6,033 km of low-pressure pipelines, serving more than 90,000 households, according to its website. Its gas transmission system, 2,230 km long, has a capacity of 13 million cubic meters per day.

Serbia gets most of its gas from Russia's Gazprom via the extension of the TurkStream pipeline through Bulgaria, and also imports Azeri gas through the interconnector with Bulgaria. As part of its efforts to diversify its energy sources, Serbia hopes to complete construction of gas connections with North Macedonia and Romania over the next two years.
