Ensuring the integrity of the Euro currency in Kosovo/ CBK and ECB sign cooperation agreement
The Central Bank of the Republic of Kosovo (CBK) and the European Central Bank (ECB) have signed a Cooperation Agreement in the field of combating counterfeiting of euro banknotes. This is expected to further strengthen the preservation and integrity of euro cash in circulation and ensure the financial stability of the country. The Agreement was signed by the Governor of the CBK, Ismaili, and the President of the ECB, Lagarde.
The agreement marks an important milestone in the alignment with European Union standards and best practices in the fight against counterfeiting, and lays the foundations for structured technical cooperation, including the exchange of information through the ECB's Counterfeit Monitoring System (CMS), which supports the identification and analysis of counterfeit euro banknotes.
Through this Agreement, the CBK will have access to the ECB's operational mechanisms designed to prevent and combat counterfeiting of euro banknotes and will be integrated into the professional cooperation network with the Eurosystem central banks and partner institutions outside the euro area, including the countries of the Western Balkans region.
This cooperation is the result of an inter-institutional effort in the Republic of Kosovo, led by the CBK, in coordination with international partners, particularly the European Union Office in Kosovo, to build a sustainable and comprehensive anti-counterfeiting framework.
The agreement strengthens the objectives set out in the legislation prepared to combat counterfeit currency, developed with the support of the National Bank of Croatia and relevant local institutions, within the framework of the EU TAIEX project, which foresees initiatives for the establishment of the National Anti-Counterfeiting Center and the National Counterfeiting Monitoring System in Kosovo, in accordance with the CBK Strategic Plan.
