The banking sector in Kosovo is consolidated - Banka Ekonomike acquires the branch of a Turkish bank
The banking sector in Kosovo is further consolidating. Recently, the Central Bank of the Republic of Kosovo has announced the approval of the acquisition by Banka Ekonomike Sh.A. of the branch of the foreign bank Türkiye İş Bankası A.Ş. – Kosovo Branch. This decision comes after reaching a preliminary agreement between these two financial institutions and obtaining the consent of the relevant banking supervision authority in Turkey, in accordance with the legal provisions in force.
According to CBK data, after this transaction, Banka Ekonomike's participation in the banking market will increase by about 1%, without affecting its position in the ranking of banks by asset size. Also, the bank will remain within regulatory parameters after the consolidation is completed.
This development follows the CBK's previous decision to transform Ziraat Bank - Kosovo Branch, from a branch of a foreign bank into a bank licensed and established in Kosovo, under the name Ziraat Kosova Sh.A., which is subject to the same regulatory requirements as all other banks operating in the country.
With this latest development, Kosovo's banking sector will no longer have branches of foreign banks operating. All banks with foreign capital will be fully established in the country, creating equal operating conditions and increased competition in the banking sector, in line with international recommendations and practices.
The CBK emphasizes that it will carefully monitor the absorption and transformation processes, ensuring their implementation in an efficient and orderly manner, with a particular focus on the protection of depositors and banking customers.
